5 SEO blogs I can’t get enough of
May 9th, 2007 by Joost SchrierEven if you’re only half serious about doing SEO you need to stay up-to-date with what’s going on in the world of search engines. To do this you can spend hours on end investigating what the search engines are doing, analyze everything you see in the search results and reverse engineer the hell out of those results. You can also go and live in a cave, grow a long beard and eat raw goat because that will end your social life as fast as trying to do all of this alone. It is just too big of a task.
Luckily there are about 10 million people like you, who want to know how you can get the best rankings in Google et al. and these people have blogs as well. So, instead of doing all the legwork on your own you can remain up-to-date by reading what those other people are blogging about, add your own know-how (,intelligence, personality, insights, etc.) and enjoy a happy hour once in a while.
Everybody has his/her own personal favorites. Bo reads entirely different blogs than I do and Oscar reads all those design blogs (which I don’t understand). So, the following “Top 5 of SEO Blogs I Can’t Get Enough Of” is a highly personal list, but I think these blogs are relevant to everybody in the world of SEO.
5. GarryConn.com: Garry Conn (note the two ‘r’s) started this blog on January 1st of this year so it’s still relatively young, but he has a sizable, and very active, fan base. He is an expert in engaging content and his blog games are always very inventive.
I don’t always agree with his view on SEO, but he makes up for this with his commitment to his visitors (e.g. he always responds to the comments left on his blog). He has taught me a lot about being social on-line and he even reviewed our website because I, inadvertently, won one of his blog games.
4. Wolf-Howl.com: Michael Gray is the (self-styled) bad boy of SEO. He has been around for a long time (his origins lie in the murky grey depths of time) and is not afraid to speak his mind about anything concerning the internet, social media and SEO in particular.
Only recently he said that the people of Digg are acting like “a bunch of petulant teenagers” and he called attention to the way in which ask.com handled their How-the-algorithm-killed-Jeeves campaign (and then plugged his own company to them). His posts are usually not very long and very infrequent, but it’s always interesting to read his take on things. Maybe some day I will have enough money saved to go to one of his SEO classes in New York.
3. ProBlogger.net: Darren Rowse’s Blog is all about helping bloggers earn money. He is a truly productive blogger in that he typically writes 2-5 posts per day and about 80% of those are very interesting (the other 20% is not uninteresting, just a little less interesting to me). If this post was about my favorite blogs that help me with earning money online, he would most definitely be number 1.
For the people that did not get here through ProBlogger: Darren frequently hosts group writing projects where a group of bloggers write about a specific subject. This month’s subject is “Top 5″ and everybody is invited to write a post about a top 5 of any kind. This, of course, gave me the idea for this particular post with which I’m also participating.
2. BruceClay.com: the blog of Bruce Clay Inc. with its voice Lisa Barone has one of the best combinations, that i know of, of content and personality. Lisa (or should I say Ms./Mrs. Barone) writes like a spoiled brat who always has arguments with her co-writer Susan, but this serves only as comic relief while the gist of the post is carried extremely well.
Whenever there’s a large conference about SEO or advertising she is there for some serious live blogging and during that period I always check my feeds a bit more closely for the latest news. Now let’s just hope that she doesn’t flame us for that spoiled brat remark (I said friendly, worshipping things as well).
1. SEOmoz.org: when I’m big and strong I want to work at SEOmoz even if it means kissing Rand Fishkin’s sneakers every morning! SEOmoz is the ultimate resource when it comes to comprehensive information and tools concerning SEO. They have the philosophy that for every resource that they put behind the Premium Member login (available at $39.95 per month) they need to have an almost equally useful resource for the world to access. How’s that for giving back to the community?
And now without the exclamation points (visible and invisible): SEOmoz is truly an interesting place to hang out on-line. Not only do they have useful articles and other resources, but they also have very loyal contributors who are equally keen on helping out other SEOs. Their posts are always very insightful and they are not afraid to ‘give away’ the trade secrets.
So, there you have it, my personal “Top 5 of SEO Blogs I Can’t Get Enough Of”. I don’t need to tell you that there are about a 1000 other blogs out there that could also be in this list, but these are the ones that I read the most.

Wow… I made the top five list! That is awesome. It is true, I do try to respond to every comment, and yes… sometimes I don’t even agree with my view on SEO! But all in all, I try to be the best in everything I do. And at the end of every day, my site would be nothing without people like you. Thanks so much mentioning me.
Best Regards,
Garry Conn

See, that’s what I mean: Garry is commitment all the way!
I wonder if the others will also respond here? Yes, this is a hint….

I am sure they will… I am a nut though because I use Technorati and del.ici.ous to monitor when people mention my name or the site. It is a great feeling to have when someone communicates feedback about me, my site or my writing.
:)
Thanks again,
Garry

SEO scares the hell out of me for 3 reasons:
1. I know nothing about it.
2. I do not have time to learn
3. I know I have to learn about it.
This seems to be a great starting point because it means more coming from a fellow blogger than from an advertisement. Thanks.

Congratulations Garry on making the top 5 list. Nice list. I would include SEObook, but I wouldn’t remove Garry’s blog.

@ Gary and Thesavvyboomer: check out this resource on SEOmoz.org: http://www.seomoz.org/article/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization
This article is exactly what it says “[a] beginner’s guide to search engine optimization”. If you’re just starting out, this is great stuff.

Great list. The only person I don’t currently read is Garry Conn. I do now… :-D

LOL, I should dedicate a post to the underdog and social media.
Here you have a list of 5 great blogs of which 4 have audiences that would make anybody jealous and the only blog that is specifically mentioned in the comments is the “small” garryconn.com (although it does a lot better than ours, but that’s beside the point). Very cool.
